Kaiya- 5 Months!

I'm definitely a bit late to the game on this post. Kaiya is exactly 11 days past her 5 month "birthday" today, but better now than not at all:)

This month little miss has put a lot of energy into both verbal and physical development. She's learning to say "mama" "papa" and, as of yesterday, "Coopa." Mostly it's just a bunch of sounds, which she convincingly acts as though are real words and that we should fully understand her 20 minute long monologues. It's honestly too cute for words.

On the physical front, she's working on a couple top teeth (though nothing has come through yet), she's growing back her hair (finally!) and she is a wonder to watch on the floor. Back to front, front to back rolling, and a truly amazing amount of shimmying. She can really get around! She can maneuver herself around from side to side, and backwards, but she hasn't quite gone forward yet (thankfully!). While it's amazing to watch her learn a little bit more every day, I'm definitely not ready for her to be mobile. Perhaps my favorite new milestone is her ability to sit upright by herself!

She insists on sitting like this while daddy is in the kitchen prepping dinner so that she can see better. It's so sweet:)

Guess what else we've started? Food!

This was a tough one for me, because I really wanted to exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months, and we might have just squeezed by if I had dedicated a large amount of my life to pumping, but even with the three pump sessions a day at work, I was "only" bringing home about 14-16 ounces and Kaiya was easily consuming 18-21 while I was away. I had storage, which was supplementing, but when we got down to about 30 ounces, I started freaking. I had images of something happening to me and her only having a day and a half of food and my soul was crushed when I envisioned someone giving her formula. (I should note here, I'm not judging anyone else who chooses to use formula. I have a personal aversion to it).

To me, the only logical choice was to do some research and figure out what my options were and I was surprised to learn that there were some real foods I could start introducing at only 5 months. I'll post another post with a bunch of the information I came across, but essentially we decided to start with egg yolk. A few days after that we introduced a little banana to the mix, and that's pretty much where we stand. Now when I'm at work, if the nanny feels so inclined, she can mix things up a bit with egg or banana and I'm no longer stressed about starving my baby or beating myself up for not keeping up with her:) Plus, it's fun to see her discover new tastes! Here is a video of when we fed her egg and banana for the first time (prior to this we were blending the egg with the milk and feeding through her bottle). I'm pretty sure John has watched this video 50 times. He loves pausing it on her different expressions:)

Possibly the most impressive part of her physical development is in the numbers. This girl is 17 lbs. and just over 27 inches long. That puts her in the 90th+ percentile for both. She completely fills her bassinet!

I can't believe how fast our little nugget is growing, but I also can't believe how much I'm enjoying watching her grow! I can easily spend an entire day just playing with her and taking in her awesome personality. She is truly just my favorite part of life. I mean, how could you not want to spend all day with this?

P.S. If you feel so inclined, John and I entered her into the "Cute Kid" contest. The winner gets a $250 gift card which we'd love to use to get her a proper high chair, so if you would (it takes 5 seconds) click on the link and vote for her. I thank you in advance!
